Chromatiques Whiteheadiennes : La collection
La collection « Chromatiques whiteheadiennes » - dirigée par Michel Weber et publiée par ontos verlag (Frankfurt / Paris / London) - est, à titre principal, l'organe des différentes activités promues par le réseau portant le même nom : elle accueille les Actes des journées d'étude et l'Annuaire (« Chromatikon ») qui publie, entre autre, le compte-rendu des séminaires les plus marquants. À titre secondaire, elle publie les monographies et ouvrages collectifs qui se veulent être le vecteur de la pensée du processus en francophonie, et ce tout spécialement lorsqu'elles promeuvent un dialogue interdisciplinaire.
Les trois premiers volumes sont disponibles.
I. La dialectique de l'intuition

Procès et réalité (1929) d'A. N. Whitehead (1861-1947) est sans doute l'ouvrage le plus important pour saisir le sens et la portée de la pensée du processus. A l'instar du corpus whiteheadien, la présente introduction procède de manière circumambulatoire, c'est-à-dire qu'elle met en ¦uvre une série convergente d'analyses contextualisantes. La première Partie met en scène le concept de « sensation pure » à l'aide d'un examen contrasté de ses inflexions bergsoniennes et whiteheadiennes. La seconde Partie expose l'intuition « systématique » de Whitehead, c'est-à-dire la rationalisation d'un mode relationnel qui rend compte de - et est justifié par - l'intuition pré-systématique. La troisième Partie affine le concept de l'Ultime en opérant un remembrement principiel « contiguïste » des paysages jusque là profilés sectoriellement.

Les premières journées « Chromatiques » se sont donné pour objectif de faciliter une réflexion globale sur la trajectoire conceptuelle du philosophe et mathématicien britannique Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947). Afin de mener le lecteur au c¦ur de l'ontologie organique de l'époque de Harvard, il est en effet urgent d'élucider Whitehead à partir de lui-même, de montrer - sans être victime d'une « illusion rétrospective » - la continuité qui s'atteste dans un développement idéel qui exploite cependant quelques notables « changements d'amure ». Les contributions au colloque, placées sous le signe du commerce avec les textes eux-mêmes, furent traversées par une double tension : d'une part, l'éclairement systématique d'un aspect technique d'une des époques spéculatives de l'auteur ; d'autre part, la mise en horizon de ce questionnement ponctuel à l'aide d'une perspective globale sur le cheminement spéculatif whiteheadien.

La réflexion whiteheadienne sur les rythmes éducatifs, par son insistance sur le concept de procès [process], nous permet sans doute d'aborder plus sereinement les problèmes actuels de l'éducation, caractérisée par un mouvement perpétuel des matières et des acteurs. La conception whiteheadienne, en insistant davantage sur le rythme de l'éducation que sur les contenus, contribue en effet à faire avancer l'idée que la méthode la plus efficace pour obtenir les résultats souhaités est de rester, dans un processus pédagogique, aussi proche que possible d'un monde global en devenir, pour en dégager une réalité nouvelle déterminée, laquelle pourra ensuite être intégrée à ce monde, avant que celui-ci ne fasse l'objet d'une nouvelle saisie. Saisie imaginaire du tout (« romance »), perception dans ce tout d'une réalité déterminée (« précision »), ensuite réintégrée à l'ensemble (« généralisation »), voilà les trois phases de la nature, mais aussi celle du procès particulier qui s'appelle l'apprentissage.

Les deuxièmes journées « Chromatiques » furent dévolues exclusivement à l'exégèse et à la contextualisation de l'ouvrage Science and the Modern World (1925). Construites autour de treize communications scientifiques, soit une par chapitre, elles se fixèrent pour objectif, d'une part, d'identifier l'apport spécifique de chaque chapitre à la lettre whiteheadienne - c'est-à-dire de mettre en perspective ses catégories principales à l'aide d'une analyse intrinséciste - et, d'autre part, de rendre manifeste sa contribution à l'histoire de la philosophie.
The second international « Chromatiques whiteheadiennes » conference was devoted exclusively to the exegesis and contextualization of Whitehead's Science and the Modern World (1925). In order to elucidate the meaning and significance of this epoch-making work, the Proceedings were designed to form a « companion » volume. With one paper devoted to each of its thirteen chapters, the Proceedings aimed, on the one hand, to identify the specific contribution of each chapter to Whitehead's own research program -that is to say, to put its categories into perspective by means of an internal analysis- and, on the other hand, to identify its global impact in the history of ideas.

The fourth international « Chromatiques whiteheadiennes » conference was devoted to the philosophy of the natural sciences that is characteristic of Whitehead's « London Epoch ». Continuing the efforts of the Liège (2001) and Louvain-la-Neuve (2003) meetings, the conference focused on An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Natural Knowledge (CUP, 1919/1925) which constitutes Whitehead's pioneering work in the field.

When Rescher's Process Metaphysics (1996) was published, it was widely acclaimed as a major step towards the academic recognition of a "mode of thought" that has otherwise been confined within sharp scholarly boundaries. Of course it is not an easy book: despite its stylistic clarity, it remains the complex outcome of a life's work in most areas of philosophy. The goal of the present volume is to systematically unfold the vices and virtues of Process Metaphysics, and thereby to specify the contemporary state of affairs in process thought. To do so, the editor has gathered one focused contribution per chapter, each paper addressing specifically and explicitly its assigned chapter and seeking to promote a dialogue with Rescher. The thesis advanced in this book is that feeling and cognition actualize through a process that originates in older brain formations and develops outward through limbic and cortical fields through the self-concept and private space into (as) the world. An iteration of this transition deposits acts, objects, feelings and utterances. Value is a mode of conceptual feeling that depends on the dominant phase in this transition: from desire through interest to object worth. Among the topics covered are subjective time and change, the epochal nature of objects and their temporal extensibility and the evolution of value from inorganic matter into organic form.
The theory of microgenesis informs this work. According to this theory, acts and objects evolve in milliseconds through phases that replicate patterns in forebrain evolution. The progression in the actualization of the mind/brain state is from archaic to recent in brain formation, from unity to diversity, from past to present and from mind to world. An account is given of the diversity of felt experience avoiding the reductionist moves characteristic of biological materialism and the inherent dualism of psychoanalytic and related theories.
This book is intended for any reader interested in the psychology of the inner life and philosophy of mind, including philosophers, psychologists, psychiatrists and others with an interest in problems of value and moral feeling.

Whitehead acknowledged that "the philosophy of organism seems to approximate more to some strains of [...] Chinese thought." Some scholars have attempted to explore this relationship and its implications. The Beijing Conference provided a good forum for interested and engaged scholars to address each other directly, in an atmosphere of mutual regard and respect. The ongoing scholarly work on process thinking in China is impressive. It is the editors' conviction that the publication of this book in English will promote international discussion of the themes and issues herein set forth. This should contribute significantly to the broader discussion between West and East, so important in this age of cultural globalization.

Process philosophy provides dynamic ways of thinking and speaking about phenomena which are closer to the organic and temporal nature of reality than the more common substantivist, object-centered discourses. Concentrating mainly on the process philosophy developed by Alfred North Whitehead, this series of essays brings together some of the newest developments in the application of process thinking to the physical and social sciences. These essays, by established scholars in the field, demonstrate how a wider and deeper understanding of the world can be obtained using process philosphical concepts, how the distortions and blockages inevitably inherent in substantivist talk can be set aside, and how new and fertile lines of research in the sciences can be opened as a result. As such, this collection represents a significant contribution to the literature of process thought, focusing as it does on the intersection between philosophy and science. In a mutually supportive process through which a more genuine understanding of natural experience in the world is achieved, these essays show how the two disciplines can collaborate intimately -to the enrichment of both.
